Ribeira do Vascão

It divides the regions of Alentejo and Algarve and has a torrential regime, with high water flows in the winter and very low ones in summer.

The river basin of Vascão provides habitats for a wide variety of species, many of which are local endemics protected by various Community directives and is therefore classified as a RAMSAR Site.

There are traces of human occupation since ancient times: The Tapir of Pedra do Alagar, the Tapir of Afonso Vicente, Arab settlement in Cerro das Relíquias, watermills and windmills.
