The “caneiro do canal”, the structure that is responsible for the mill’s name, was the last of the fish catching traps to stop working in 1990. It consisted of a barrier trap made from plant material (reeds and oleanders), placed next to the water dams of the mills. In this former Guadiana reservoir, there was the mechanical purpose of the dam along with the submersible mills, as well as the cane structures (channels), which were actually fishing traps that would later be banned. The masonry structures on which they were based is all that remains, thus maintaining its ethnographic interest.
