Embraced by Ribeira de Oeiras and the Guadiana River, ensuring it enviable conditions of defence, Mértola is reinforced with the imposing walls that surround the old town. The main streets that are parallel to the river communicate with each other through narrow passages, overlaying the ancient lines of Roman and Islamic times. It was a gateway to the Mediterranean Sea and this is what made it a prominent place in the region. During the Phoenician era, but also with Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, it was the greatest commercial for mining and agricultural production throughout the South of the Alentejo territory due to its location.
The castle, the clock tower, the Islamic alcazaba, the main church and the many museums are places to visit.
